The history of the US36 Highway Association, Inc. is routed in the evolution of Auto & Booster Clubs of the 1890's.More affordable automobiles off the assembly line sparked the Grand Vision to build a Trans-Continental Highway
(New York to San Francisco). In 1913, by merging & re-organizing five existing associations
the Pike's Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway (PPOO) was formed. * Springfield-Hannibal Highway Association - Illinois*Hannibal - St Joseph Cross State Highway Association - Missouri*Rock Island Highway Association (RIHA) - Kansas -- Formed March 13th, 1913 by A.Q. Miller & a group of business men*The Lincoln Highway Association (division of LHA) - Colorado -- LHA was formed May 1913 in Pennsylvania*The Utah Division of the Pike's Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway Association Pike's Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway Assoc. is formed March 18th, 1914 - 'Better Roads & Street' issue May 1914

September 21st, 1913 A.Q. Miller, of Belleville, KS [Jayhawk Editor/Newspaper Publisher] along with Governor Hodges and members of the Blue Book Corporation departed from
the Robidoux Hotel, St Joseph, MO in a two-car convoy to map the route across Kansas.

In the July issue of AAA's American Motorist, the article reads: "Pike's Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway: the street from Hell's Gate to the Golden Gate"...is the superlative scenic route. It leads to places of beauty and grandeur; it gives expression to the phrase
'See America'!
JUNE 1924
The Citizens Good Roads Association magazine wrote: "The PPOO is the general scenic route of the United States....it's the shortest transcontinental highway in the United States. Roughly it follows the 40th parallel... running westward in almost a straight line."
1916 - 1939
1916: Federal-Aid Road Acts created by Congress - 1921 Federal Highway Act established including the Bureau of Public Roads
Documented by Richard F. Weingroff (Federal Highway Administration). By 1925 road names, overlapping roads, starting and end points were blurred and confusing.
1926
State highway agencies in concert with Bureau of Public Roads created a national marking system.
The US Numbered Highways..... Hence, Number 36 (south of the 40th parallel)!
